3.3.7 Mixed Interrogative Sentences.
EXAMPLES
(i) Direct : Auster said, “Who is not ready to die for his Motherland, my countrymen?
Will you follow me if I lead the way?
Indirect : Auster asked his countrymen who was not ready to die for his Motherland
and if they would follow him if he led the way.
(ii) Direct : “Am I not your father? Did I not bring you up? Why do you insult me in
this way?” said he to his sons.
Indirect : He enquired of his sons if he was not their father and if he had not brought
them up. He further asked them why they insulted him in that way.
(iii) Direct : “Boys,” said the teacher, “why don’t you attend to the lesson? You will
repent if you are not careful now.”
Indirect : The teacher asked the boys why they did not attend to the lesson and warned
them that they would repent if they were not careful then.
(iv) Direct : “Don’t I want the good of the people too?” said Sita Ram to Professor
Ramukshi. “Why am I making frantic efforts to have the college started?
A stitch in time saves nine.”
Indirect : Sita Ram asked Professor Ramukshi if he didn’t want the good of the people
and why he was making frantic efforts to have the college started. He
further told him (S.R.) that a stitch in time saves nine.
