                   Notes            •  Geoffrey Chaucer was the preeminent English poet, and he remains in the top tier of the
                                      English canon.
                                    •  Chaucer first appears in public records in 1357 as a member of the house of Elizabeth, Count-
                                      ess of Ulster.
