2.4 summary
l A foreign language is a language that is native to some other country. It can also be referred
to a language that is not spoken in the native country of a person.
l Knowledge of one or more foreign languages can be useful in a wide range of careers. For
some jobs, such as translating, interpreting and language teaching, language skills are one
of the main requirements.
l Learning another language needs to be fun, otherwise, you may it hard to stay devoted.
You need to be patient and celebrate small achievements.
l Once you have a learned a new language, you will be amazed at how much easier it
is to understand a third language. Very soon you will be speaking or at least have an
understanding of every major language that exists.
l Businesses that intend to compete internationally need employees who can competently
communicate in the locales where they do business. Employees who speak one language
can communicate only with people who speak that same language.
l Some of the jobs that you can take up after learning a foreign language are teaching,
translating, interpreting and freelancing.
l Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world, followed by English. Other popular
languages include French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Arabic and Portuguese.
