After studying this unit, you will be able to:

Describe the status of sickness of SSI's in India
                                       Explain the causes of sickness
Discuss the symptoms and cure of sickness

                                   Introduction

The term ‘sickness’ has been variedly defined by various authorities but, as a matter of fact, so
far, the term itself has not received any universal recognition which could justify the concept of
sickness in small-scale industries. This major handicap has acted as a fuel in the failure to
recognize the actual state of sickness in these industries. A vagueness in the conceptual framework
has contributed to confusion and has acted in a further deterioration of SSIs while recovering
from their ill-health. It would be appropriate to examine critically some of the authoritative
definitions and finally come up with a plausible outcome suggestive of the structure of the
                                   concept.
