5. Introduce yourself: Sometimes you need to introduce yourself to other people. This is Notes
appropriate in social and business settings when you meet someone for the first time.
When making a self-introduction it is appropriate to extend your right hand, greet the
person, and give your name. Even at a meeting with others you know, take time to
introduce yourself to people you do not know. See Figure.

Task You work for Global Village, an import/export company specializing in products
made from sustainable materials. On the phone and in person, you often deal with people
who do not speak English as their first language. As a team, meet to discuss the following
topics:
1. What special challenges do nonnative speakers have in a business environment?
2. What special challenges do members of an organization have when dealing with
nonnative speakers?
3. How can you improve communication?
4. What guidelines can you follow to improve intercultural communication?
(a) Reach a consensus on the answers to these questions.
(b) On your own, summarize the guidelines you identified.
5.9 Summary
You form and enhance relationships through communication. Taking time to make a
personal telephone call, briefly visiting colleagues at their desks when they are free, or
discussing business over lunch help to foster goodwill among colleagues and decision
makers. Business is built on friendships, connections, trust, and personal relations. Take
advantage of opportunities to connect and communicate with other people in and outside
of your organization.
