Introduction
Digital libraries, once project-based and largely autonomous efforts, are maturing. As individual
programs have grown, each has developed its own personality, reflecting the circumstances of its
creation and environment, and its leadership. This report draws on the results of a survey and case
studies to reveal how these influences have moulded a range of organizational forms that we call the
digital library.
13.1 Classification-Purpose and Types
A library classification or indexing is a system of coding and organizing library materials (books,
serials, audiovisual materials, computer files, maps, manuscripts) according to their subject and
allocating a call number to that information resource.
Similar to classification systems used in biology, bibliographic classification
systems group those entities together that are similar, typically arranged in a
hierarchical tree structure.
