Introduction
Professional higher education in library and information science (LIS) in India, now nine
decades old, is centred in universities. Exceptions are two national institutes, namely, the
Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC) in Bangalore, and the education section
of the Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre (INSDOC) in New Delhi. These two
institutes concentrate on the training of professionals for special and industrial libraries and
information centres. Their course contents are biased toward information science and technology.
These two institutes are a class apart from other programmes in their environment and products.
There are some regional library associations conducting certificate courses of a few months
