Social Stratification
Notes • In ancient and medieval times, the prevalence of private landholding, interaction between
socio-economic classes, trade and society, and agrarian growth and social conflicts
characterized the class structure of Indian society. The colonial class structure could be seen
in terms of the complex nexus between state, capital and labour.

1. Bourgeoisie : It is a word used in the fields of Political economy, political philosophy,
sociology and history which denotes the wealthy stratum of the middle class
that originated during the latter part of the middle ages.
2. Segregation : The action or state of setting someone or something apart from other people
