Unit 1: Computer as a Design Tool
A graphic designer is a professional within the graphic design and graphic arts industry who Notes
assembles together images, typography or motion graphics to create a piece of design. A graphic
designer creates the graphics primarily for printed, published or electronic media, such as
advertising and brochures. They are also sometimes responsible for illustration, typesetting,
web design, user interfaces or take a teaching position. A core responsibility of the designer’s
job is to present information in a way that is both accessible and unforgettable.
1.2.4 Types of Graphic Design
Graphic designers use a wide variety of communication tools, mainly typography and image, in
order to convey a message on behalf of client to particular viewers.
Image-based Design
Designers develop images to represent the ideas their clients want to communicate. Images can
be extremely influential and convincing means of communication, conveying not only
information but also moods and emotions. People react to images instinctively based on their
personalities, associations, and previous experience. For example, you know that a green dot
means vegetarian, and this knowledge in combination with the image creates a visual pun.
Figure 1.4: The Image based Graphic Design
In the case of image-based design, the images must transmit the entire message; there are few if
any words to help. These images may be photographic, painted, drawn, or graphically rendered
in many different ways. Image-based design is used when the designer determines that a picture
is indeed worth a thousand words.
Type-based Design
In some cases, designers rely on words to express a message, but they use words in a different
way from what writers do. To designers, what the words look like is as important as their
meaning. They can arrest your attention on a poster, identify the product name on a package or
a truck, and present running text as the typography in a book does. Designers are experts at
presenting information in a visual form in print or on film, packaging, or signs.
