4.8 Sharing Family Photos

Most families today have digital photographs which can be uploaded on the web or can be
shared via email. Online photo sharing also referred to as Web-based photo sharing service has
become increasing popular as most individuals share their photographs with others by publishing
these online or mailing them to others. Photo sharing can thus be defined as a process of
publishing or transferring digital photos online, thus enabling the user to share these photos
with other users. This function is provided through both websites and applications that facilitate
the upload and display of images. The term also includes the use of online photo galleries that
are set up and managed by individual users.

In the present era, lots of commercial and non-commercial photo sharing sites are available.
Flickr (www.flickr.com) is a very popular non-commercial online photo management and
sharing application. It has a huge community of users and tons of ways to interact with them.
You can share or simply store all you digital photos privately using this application.

When you have photos you want to share with friends and family, the best way is to use a
Web-based photo sharing service. Certain commercial online photo sharing sites such as
Shutterfly (www.shutterfly.com) takes photo sharing to an advanced level as it allows visitors
to order prints of the photographs you upload. This site sells you prints of your photographs
and other products. Using these sites you can create your own online photo albums. You then
upload digital photographs to these albums. You then send the album as URL to your friends
and family and they can view your photos online.

Another benefit you get from uploading to a photo-sharing site is the ability to send your
images to professional photo finishers. Even more ambitious than this is to create a book from
your photos, something Blurb.com excels at. Most photo hosting sites can send your pictures to
the local pharmacy chain where you can pick up prints, and services that print the photos on
mugs and tee-shirts, calendars, and greeting cards are very common.
Web-based photo editing applications such as Adobe’s Photoshop Express can be used to edit
photographs before sharing them or uploading them on the online photo-sharing sites. With
easy-to-use photo editing tools you can edit your photographs easily.
