Cloud Computing
Notes Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a way to rent hardware, operating systems, storage and
network capacity over the Internet.
Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software distribution model in which applications are
hosted by a vendor or service provider and made available to customers over a network,
typically the Internet.
The uptime of Cloud Computing based solutions is an advantage, when compared to
businesses running their own infrastructure, but often overlooked is the co-occurrence of
downtime in vendor-driven monocultures. The use of globally decentralized data centers
for vendor Clouds minimizes failure, aiding its adoption.
A community cloud in computing is a collaborative effort in which infrastructure is shared
between several organizations from a specific community with common concerns of
security, compliance, jurisdiction, etc. whether managed internally or by a third-party
and hosted internally or externally.
The C3 arises from concerns over Cloud Computing, specifically controlled by vendors
and lack of environmental sustainability.
The uptime of Cloud Computing based solutions is an advantage, when compared to
businesses running their own infrastructure.
The Community Cloud is as much a social structure as a technology paradigm, because of
the community ownership of the infrastructure. The Community Cloud is not owned or
controlled by single organization, and therefore not dependent on the life-span or failure
of single organization.
A virtual community is a community of people sharing common interests, ideas, and
feelings over the Internet or other collaborative networks.
5.8 Keywords
Community Cloud Computing (C3): Community Cloud Computing offers an alternative
architecture, created by combing the Cloud with paradigms from Grid Computing, principles
from Digital Ecosystems, and sustainability from Green Computing, while remaining true to
the original vision of the Internet.
Green computing: Also known as green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing
or IT.
Grid computing: It is a form of distributed computing in which an organization (business,
university, etc.) uses its existing computers (desktop and/or cluster nodes) to handle its own
long-running computational tasks.
Public cloud: It is established where several organizations have similar requirements and seek
to share infrastructure so as to appliance. In addition, it can be economically attractive as the
resources (storage, workstations) utilized and shared in the community are already exploited.
Quality of Service (QoS): The quality of service refers to several related aspects of telephony
and computer networks that allow the transport of traffic with special requirements.
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS): Software as a Service is a software distribution model in which
applications are hosted by a vendor or service provider and made available to customers over
a network, typically the Internet.
Virtual community: It is a community of people sharing common interests, ideas, and feelings
over the Internet or other collaborative networks.
