Introduction
In this unit we will focus on vocabulary. We all know that words are the building blocks of a
language. They are the very foundation that supports our thinking. The richness of a person’s
vocabulary is popularly thought to be a reflection of intelligence or level of education.
A rich vocabulary also improves students’ ability to communicate through speaking, listening,
and writing

2.1.1 Affixes and Roots
Adding affi xes to existing words (the base or root) to form new words is common in academic
English. Prefi xes are added to the front of the base (like dislike), whereas suffi xes are added to
