Introduction
Evaluation of the performance of library and information systems is one of the major concerns and
an integral part of the library and information systems manager’s job. It is widely recognised as an
important issue, although it has been looked at or defined variously. Many librarian decision makers
need to know about the quality of existing services, they also want to know how well the library
meets stated goals and objectives and information needs of its users, Evaluation provides decision
makers an insights into service, collections and staff which can be used to produce changes and
improve planning.
Evaluation is the process of identifying and collecting data about specific services or activities,
establishing criteria by which their success can be assessed.
Performance evaluation of a library and information system or its components can be required for
different reasons. For example, the evaluation of the performance of library and information systems
and the resulting data could be used to assess how well the system meets its objectives or for
justification of continuance of a service.
