5.1 Windows Features
The hottest new features of Windows 98 are as follows:
Improved Setup: Within two years of introducing Windows 95, Microsoft completely
upgraded its software. Windows 98 is a completely redesigned and speedier version.
Windows 98 also supports direct upgrades from Windows 3.1x. Windows 98 set up uses
the information in Windows 95 to detect the utilities and hardware already installed
on the computer. This helps speed the initial setup process as setup then does not have
to do full hardware detection.
Improved Desktop: The Windows 98 desktop includes many new enhancements,
including floating toolbars that are accessible right from the taskbar. We can drag icons
on to and off the Start menu. Going through Windows Explorer to manipulate Start
menu options is no longer necessary. The Start menu now includes a ‘‘Favorites”
category containing shortcuts to all our favorite resources and web sites. The Help
facility has been improved and uses the new HTML format.
Integration With the Web: Windows 98 supports Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 which
includes Outlook Express, Microsoft NetMeeting, NetShow, and FrontPage Express.
Outlook Express is a new e-mail/newsgroup client that supports POP3, HTML Mail,
and NNTP (newsgroup support). NetMeeting is an Internet conferencing tool that
enables Internet users to perform audio, video, and text based conferences over the
Internet with other users. NetShow is Microsoft’s networked multimedia software for
on-demand audio and video capabilities. FrontPage Express is a personal web page
editing tool.
Multiple Display Support: One of Windows 98’s new features is called “Multiple
Display Support” the capability to extend our Windows 98 desktop over two or more
monitors.
Web-Based Support Tools: The Internet has allowed Microsoft to enable easier support
in Windows 98. A new web-based utility helps reduce the cost of ownership and makes
upgrading much easier by providing a simple update engine that helps update
Windows 98 components and drivers easily.
Windows Tune-Up Wizard: Windows Tune-Up Wizard, another utility in Windows 98,
is designed to make computing easier. It enables us to schedule and run regular tune-
ups of the operating system easily which will help programs run faster, free space on
hard drive, and help we achieve optimal system performance.
Disk Cleanup: A utility related to the Windows Tune-Up Wizard is the new Disk
Cleanup tool. This new tool removes unnecessary files from a disk.
Task Scheduler: Task Scheduler provides a friendly and easy-to-use interface for
scheduling applications. It enables us to schedule a script, a program or a document
to be run at any time or interval—from everyday to once a year—or on events such
as system startup, user log on, or system idle.
