                  Notes             (ii) Change the following sentences from Assertive to Exclamatory:
                                        (a) The nightingale sang very nicely.
                                        (b) It is sad that he has lost his father.
                                        (c) It was a great fall, my countrymen.
                                        (d) His ways are very mysterious.
                                        (e) He is very unlucky.
                                 2.1.7 Different Ways of Expressing a Condition
                                 Here are some of the commonest ways of expressing a condition:
                                     1. By using the Conjunction ‘if; as—
                                       If you run fast, you will carry the day.     (Future Tense)
                                       If I were you, I would help him.             (Present Tense)
                                       If he had worked hard, he would have passed.  (Past Tense)
                                     2. By using the Conjunction ‘if’ (understood); as—
                                       Had he worked hard, he would have passed.
                                       Were you ill, you should stay at home.
                                       Should you see him in the bazaar, send him to me.
                                     3. By using the Conjunction ‘unless’; as—
                                       You won’t get through the examination unless you work hard.
                                       Unless you speak the truth, I shall not let you go.
                                     4. By using an Absolute Participle; as—
                                       Supposing he doesn’t succeed, what will he do?
                                       Provided you do not stand in my way, I am sure to win the prize.
                                     5. By using a Conjunctional Phrase; as—
                                       In case you are in danger, pull the chain.
                                       But that she is (if she is not) ill, she would take the examination.
                                     6. By using the Preposition ‘but’ followed by a Phrase or Clause as Object; as—
                                       But for your timely help, I would have been killed.
                                       But that you were shy, you would certainly have made your mark as a speaker.
                                     7. By using the Imperative Mood; as—
                                       Run fast and you will catch the train.
                                       Work hard and you will get a scholarship.
                                     8. By using the Phrase one more; as—
                                       One more word, and I strike.
                                       One more step, and you will fall into the well.
                                     9. By using an Interrogative Sentence; as—
                                       Are you running temperature? Then you should not move out.
                                       Will you look sharp? Then you will catch the train.

                                 6. Re-write the following sentences in as many ways as you can:
                                      (i) Weather permitting, we shall go out for a walk.
                                      (ii) If you stay with me, nobody can do you harm.
                                     (iii) But for your timely arrival, he would have been drowned.
