            Objectives

            The objectives of this unit can be summarized as below:
            •   to know about objectives and significance of NIVH.

            Introduction

            The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) at Dehradun is an apex body in the field
            of Education and Rehabilitation of the Visually Handicapped in India under the Ministry of Social
            Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The institute occupies 43 acres on the Mussoorie-
            Dehradun Highway.
            The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) in Dehradun orginated as St. Dunstan's
            hostel for the war-blinded in 1943. The Government of India took over the building on January 1,
            1950 and renamed it as the 'Training Centre for the Adult Blind' (Men).
            National Institute for the Orthopaediaclly Handicapped is an apex organization in the area of
            locomotor disability Orthopaedically Handicapped) which came into the nations' service since 1978
            as an autonomous body under the ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of
            India. It is located in the city Kolkata and expanding its services whole countrywide.

            30.1 Objectives of NIVH

            The aims and objectives of the NIVH as stated in the Memorandum of Association are as follows:
            (i)  To conduct, sponsor, co-ordinate and/or subsidize research in collaboration with other NGOs
                and research organizations including Universities into various dimensions of the education
                and rehabilitation of the visually impaired.
            (ii)  To undertake, sponsor, co-ordinate or subsidise research into biomedical engineering leading
                to the effective evaluation of special appliances/instruments or suitable surgical or medical
                procedures or the development of new special appliances/instruments.
            (iii)  To undertake or sponsor the training of trainees and various specialized professionals including
                Teachers, Employment Officers, Psychologists, Vocational Counsellors and such other personnel
                as deemed necessary.
