5.2 summary

y To present a classification on hierarchy of science, Comte chose the theory of expanding
dependence. In other words, according to Comte’s thinking, knowledge or every branch of
science is dependent on the theories propounded about the branch/branches of science/
sciences that came before it in the hierarchy.
y According to Comte, every science is not only dependent on the last science/sciences but keeps
nurturing these science/sciences with their discoveries.
y In this hierarchy of science the premier place is given to mathematics. This is because of
Comate’s belief that Mathematics is the oldest, fundamental and flawless science.
y Comte was not satisfied by the prevalent metaphysical and religious methods of his time to
study social events. He gave the highest importance to scientific techniques.
