Unit 6: Cloud Computing for the Corporation

                                                                                                Notes

Case Study Virtualization for Cloud Computing

             Challenges

Improve efficiency and reduce TCO of increasingly diverse and complex
                 virtualization infrastructure.

Currently, two-way servers have reached a bottleneck in terms of increasing
                 virtualization efficiencies.
            Solutions Notes

Four-way servers fitted with the Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 series.
            Impact
The Intel Xeon processor 7500 series delivers high performance and excellent
scalability in both virtualization and non-virtualization configurations.
Facilitates the overall optimization of increasingly diverse and complex corporate
IT infrastructure along with more efficient use of server resources and lower TCO.
Going Beyond the Limits of Silo-style Virtualization
CTC conducted trials using the Intel Xeon processor 7500 series before the processor was
even released. Discussing the objectives of these trials, Tomoyuki Higashi, General
Manager of the Infrastructure Solutions Marketing Department in the IT Business Marketing
Division of CTC, said that "we need to strengthen the solutions and services we offer for
IT infrastructure and we have adopted virtualization technology based on the latest
hardware to give impetus to our cloud computing business. In particular, we found recently
that we have reached the limit in the cost savings possible using silo-style virtualization
and server integration on their own. Instead we are looking at trailing the potential for
further reductions in TCO achieved by sharing an even larger server resource in the form
            of company-wide cloud computing."

Delivering High Performance Virtualization and Scalability
In conducting trials of a four-way server fitted with the Intel Xeon processor 7500 series,
CTC's two specific objectives were to verify its performance and its scalability in a
virtualization environment. The performance testing considered the performance of integer
processing, floating point operations, a C compiler, and system calls. The virtualization
scalability testing that measured the number of virtual machines possible when running
a J2EE application (Java Pet Store*).
            Questions:

            1. Discuss the optimization of IT infrastructure with cloud computing by intel in a
group of four students and prepare a group report.

            2. What is the impact of trials conducted by CTC?
