12.4 Summary
There is a better way to manage your email—in the form of web based email services, also
known as web mail or HTTP email.
Unlike traditional POP email, web mail can be accessed from any PC using any web
browser, and all your messages are stored on the web, not locally.
Gmail groups together related email messages in what Google calls conversations. A
conversation might be an initial message and all the replies (and replies to replies) to that
message; a conversation might also be all the daily emails from a single source that have
a common subject, such as messages from subscribed-to mailing lists.
The most-used instant messaging program is AOL Instant Messenger. AIM is especially
popular among the teen and preteen crowd, although people of all ages can and do use it.
WebEx supports multiple video streams so you can view up to six people in the meeting,
not just the person presenting. WebEx also supports mobile devices so even participants
away from their computers can participate in the conference through their smartphones
or mobile devices like iPads.
GoToMeeting has multiple ways to interact with the presentation; the presenter can.
GoToMeeting has a strong focus on desktop and document sharing, but skips video support
altogether.
Some tools require participants to download a small application the first time they’re
used.
If your conferencing needs are limited to showing or sharing a Website, this method is
likely to create a better view for the participants, and require less bandwidth, than desktop
sharing.
