5.3 Summary
• In structured observation, the researcher specifies in detail what is to be observed and
how the measurements are to be recorded. It is appropriate when the problem is clearly
defined and the information needed is specified.
• In personal observation, a researcher observes actual behaviour as it occurs. The observer
may or may not normally attempt to control or manipulate the phenomenon being observed.
• Data refers to information or facts usually collected as the result of experience, observation
or experiment or premises. Data may consist of numbers, words, or images, particularly
as measurements or observations of a set of variables.
• In primary data collection, you collect the data yourself using methods such as interviews
and questionnaires.
