26.3.1 Present Position of Distance Education System
Besides IGNOU, there are nine Open Universities and 64 Institutions of Correspondence Courses
and Directorates of Distance Education in Conventional Universities in India.
Total enrolment through this non-formal system of learning is nearly 13 per cent of the total
enrolment of nearly 7.8 million students enrolled in Universities and Colleges.
26.3.2 National Institute of Open Schooling
At the school level, the Central Board of Secondary Education set up the National Open School
in July 1979 which subsequently became an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of
Human Resource Development, Department of Education, Government of India. It offers a
number of programmes.
