Planning and Managing IT Infrastructure
Notes 3.5 Summary
Project management is the defining factor of an organisation’s success which is considered
as a meter that gauges the potential risks and finds the solutions to overcome them.
A project is defined in terms of its distinctive characteristics, that is, a project is a temporary
endeavour undertaken to create a unique product or service.
Project Management tries to gain control over various variables such as time, cost, quality,
scope, risk, people and process.
Each project phase is marked by completion of one or more deliverables. A deliverable is
a tangible, verifiable work product such as a feasibility study, a detail design, or a working
prototype.
Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project
activities to meet project requirements.
To help understanding the integrative nature of project management, and to emphasise
the importance of integration, project management has been defined in terms of the
various component processes and their interactions.
Project management knowledge areas include all the aspects of the project management
that are required for the successful completion of a project on time with the best output.
The Project Management Knowledge Areas describes project management knowledge

organised into nine knowledge areas such as Project Integration Management, Project
Scope Management, etc.
