Graphic Tools
Notes The Refine Edge dialog box can be accessed from multiple locations in the Photoshop user
interface, some of them new to CS4.
1. Use Quick Selection Tool (W) to select the subject from your photograph. Make use of the
Add for Selection and Subtract from Selection buttons in order to select your subject
nicely. Less selection is advised when dealing with soft areas like hair.

Your image should resemble the image above.
2. Next open the Refine Edge dialog box. Some of the settings here includes – the View Mode
which includes the background selected based on the photograph chosen, Edge Detection
where you need a small radius number which should not be too high, Adjust Edge to
experiment with the edges and finally how we save the photo we worked on (Output to),
and you’ll have a list to choose from. The box “Decontaminate colors” should be ticked at
all times, and the amount at 100%. The color “spill” from background to your subject is
extremely useful.
